I Was "Happy"

I woke up to a start after a night of drinking. My surroundings materialized as I came out of my haze and saw the clock blinking 1:00 pm. I was happy; I had woken up earlier than usual and I wasn't that hungover. I rolled out of bed and headed to the couch for my morning ritual of TV watching.

Before long I got hungry and I had my typical "lunch" of pizza followed by more TV. Evening time rolled around and I headed to the bar for some greasy food and some good beers. Before I knew it, it was 1:00 pm on a Sunday. I was happy. I was having fun and living my life. College was great and my life was even better. Then why did I feel so inadequate?

My heart was telling me something my mind would not. I wanted to change, but I didn't think I could. I would try a fad diet, but fall off after a few weeks. The facts were I wasn't "fit," and I never would be. I could never become like those models in the magazine. They were the perfect definition of fitness, and I knew I could never get there. So why even try? I was 245 lbs, but I was happy. Or at least I thought I was...

Change wouldn't be easy.

At school, I was surrounded by other students who had no trouble staying in shape. There was no way I could ever get that fit. It wasn't until I found a real support system, that I truly began my fitness journey.

I surrounded myself with people who believed they could change. I jumped headfirst into training. It wasn't always easy. I missed workouts and fell into old habits. My support system ensured I never fell too far off the rails. I learned that no one is perfect, and those "perfect" fitness models aren't really perfect. The coaches, family, and friends I surrounded myself made me believe I could change.

It's been 5 years since my college days. I've competed in over a dozen triathlons, quit my job, and began an epic bike trip across the country. Now, I believe anything is possible. The road may be hard, but the support system I've developed never fails to get me through.
