Losing weight is seen as the hardest thing you can do. Whenever you need to lose weight you’re afraid. You have to start a new diet that severely restricts your food. YOU HAVE to start exercising and burning calories. When people think they have to lose weight what often follows is a state of panic. There is so much you have to know about food let alone exercise that losing weight can feel impossible.
I completely understand this. Anytime you turn on the TV you see commercials that promise to help you lose weight. Whether it be Weight Watchers, Noom, or Peloton. Our society here in the US is constantly harassed with solutions that help you lose weight and keep it off. Yes, these programs can help, but often the weight loss is temporary. How many people do you know that have lost weight and gained it right back a year later?

This study illustrates that only 20% of people are successful. It says that 20% of overweight individuals were successful in keeping it off for an entire year. To be honest, this surprises me. I thought the number would be even lower than this. Regardless, 20% is still a very low number. 20% of people were only able to keep the weight loss they had for a year.
It is because of this that losing weight is never seen as easy. However, it is a lot easier than you think. The problem lies in one dogmatic approach to losing weight. Everyone is different. In truth, your mom would need to do something completely different from you to lose weight. Check out this post to start with something easy: whole foods.
We never think about this, but it’s true because losing weight is so individual. So what do you do?
Losing weight starts with what works for you
The problem most people have when they start to pick a new diet is to follow a specific diet. Maybe it’s something that has worked for a friend or family member. But what works for someone else may not work for you. In reality, weight loss is easier then you think. You lose weight when you eat fewer calories than you burn.
Use this calculator to find how many calories you should eat on a day where you have no exercise. It also includes some adjustments for activities you partake in everyday.

Yes, it may be an easy calculation, but in reality, it’s not easy. Think about how many people you know try to lose weight, but only gain it back later. This is the problem and the major issue with any diet. You start eating a certain way that is completely unsustainable for the future. Whether this is keto, south beach diet, or low carb.
Because of this losing weight is always seen as hard because you have to completely change your habits. So, where do you start? What do you do?
Starting to Lose Weight in a Way That Feels Effortless
This is easy to say, but hard to do. We know that eating fewer calories than you burn will help you lose weight, but actually doing it is nearly impossible. Why? The truth is people try to do too much too quickly. An example of this is my attitude towards weight loss. I have an excuse for having gained weight lately after dramatically losing 20 lbs. in the hospital. Since then I have been lucky to eat healthily and gained that weight back but about 15lbs. more than I wanted.
So where would I start? For me, the easiest method is to engage in intermittent fasting. This essentially means skipping some meals such as breakfast and even lunch. Yes, I do get hungry, but it often passes within an hour. I’ve seen my weight dropping and it doesn’t stress me out and I don’t think about food.

This doesn’t work for everyone, but think about what could work for you. Why would it work? Perhaps focusing on smaller meals sizes that use your hand as a guide could be your way to go!
The truth is you are the ultimate guide and decision-maker when it comes to losing weight. No diet will do it for you, but slowly changing your habits is the way to go. A diet completely changes them. Start slow. Perhaps, buy a different drink at the store instead of soda.
Overcoming the Past and Starting New
Deciding to lose weight is an easy decision but following through with it can be very difficult. Most people follow their past approach when losing weight again. This can be a good strategy, but often you only do it because you know what to do. Unfortunately, most people approach dieting with unsustainable and difficult approaches. Think about your friends or family that have dieted. It was likely very difficult and they found it very hard to follow their diets.
Tune to this post to see a better way. This post will show you that you can avoid the diet hype and eat better naturally. The short and simple way to do this is to first sit down and evaluate what is hurting your diet the most. Can you eliminate or limit these activities? Can you replace them with a healthier activity?

The easiest way to lose weight is with this method. Instead of trying to change everything at once, you should begin by eliminating bad habits. By doing this, you don’t change everything at once. Instead, you make small changes that can be sustained. You can also slowly replace these activities with healthier ones.
A great example is having sugary cereal every morning. We all know this cannot be the healthiest thing. However, we do it because we have always done it. Instead of going on a completely new diet, we can reduce or eliminate this habit. If you did this what could be something else you could eat instead?
It could be a healthier cereal from Magic Spoon or better yet a different breakfast of eggs and oatmeal. This method allows you to make changes slowly. This helps the changes to actually last. Think about one bad eating habit you have. What could you do instead? Could you do it less?
Finding the Support You Need for Losing Weight
Losing weight alone is never easy. Most people try to do it alone, but find it nearly impossible. That’s why so many groups exist like Weight Watchers that allow you to lose weight with others.
So, do you have a group you could join or one you could form? Think carefully before you answer. The people we hang around with are most important for our success or failure. We don’t think about this often, but people determine our success or failure. Think about it. By having someone that tells you to keep going you often do. Or even a supportive boss that is in your corner when you need them.
